Tragedy Shocks Football World: Liverpool Star Diogo Jota (28) and Brother Killed in Fiery Car Crash — Just 11 Days After His Wedding
The football world is in mourning after Liverpool forward Diogo Jota (28) and his younger brother André Felipe Silva (26) were killed in a devastating car accident overnight in Palacios de Sanabria, Spain. The crash occurred just eleven days after Jota’s wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso.
According to Spanish media outlet Marca, the brothers were driving a Lamborghini around 12:30 AM when they attempted to overtake another vehicle. One of the tires reportedly exploded, causing the car to veer off the road. Witnesses say the vehicle was immediately engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading into surrounding vegetation.
Both Jota and his brother died at the scene. André was a professional footballer himself, playing for Portuguese club Clube Penafiel.
From Wedding Bells to Funeral Bells
Jota had just tied the knot with his fiancée Rute, and only five days ago shared joyful wedding photos on Instagram. He leaves behind three children, the youngest born just last year.
What began as a celebration of love has now turned into a nightmare beyond words for his wife, family, and millions of fans.

Clubs and Nations in Shock
Liverpool released a brief statement saying it is “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Diogo Jota,” adding that the club will continue to support the family but will not comment further out of respect for their privacy.
In Portugal and Spain, grief and disbelief have rippled through the football community.
“Spain and Portugal are in absolute shock,” reports correspondent Richard Hogenkamp. “What we’re hearing is that the brothers were traveling at high speed when the accident occurred. The tire burst may have been the trigger, but the full details remain unclear.”
A Career Cut Cruelly Short
Diogo Jota was one of Portugal’s brightest stars. He debuted for the national team in 2019, earned nearly 50 caps, and played a crucial role in Portugal’s recent Nations League victory.
At Liverpool, Jota wore the number 20 jersey and had just wrapped up a Premier League title-winning season under new manager Arne Slot.
“Two Champions Lost Forever”
The Portuguese Football Federation expressed devastation on social media, writing:
“Diogo was far more than an extraordinary player — he was a remarkable human being, beloved by teammates and respected by opponents. We have lost two champions. Their deaths mark an irreparable loss for Portuguese football.”
The federation has asked UEFA for a minute of silence before the upcoming Euro match between Portugal and Spain.
